Artist Statement

In his exhibition titled “Pitched”, Terence Nott seeks to record the everyday familiar urban landscapes of his neighbourhood before they vanish …..from the texture of the rear lanes, with their bluestone paving and DIY sheds, fences and gates, to the painted facades, concrete verandahs and wrought iron trims of the 1950’s and 60’s. The process is like discovery and recording in reverse. He has a fascination with the works made by ship artists and botanical artists as they recorded land forms and vegetation before moving on to new discoveries. People turn to these recorded works to compare them against the changes that have occurred. 

His work expresses the paradox between heritage restoration and the loss of a more familiar cultural urban landscape. His upcoming book, also titled “Pitched”, is a collection of annotated drawings of the changing lanes in Fitzroy and Carlton.

Artist Bio

Terence “Terry” Nott grew up in Rochester, northern Victoria, where he was encouraged to draw from an early age. With a love of drawing and rural buildings, Terence enrolled and studied Architecture at Melbourne University and graduated in 1970. After living and travelling in Europe in the 70’s he ended up residing in North Fitzroy at a time when the area was just starting to change from a traditional working class suburb with a European influence to a more “so called” liveable and gentrified model. These changes have influenced the subjects of his artwork. Whilst practising architecture he has pursued his drawing and painting, including during his travels in Australia, Europe and Asia. His drawing style has been influenced by his background in architectural illustration and, through his drawings, he has contributed to magazines and books. This is his first solo exhibition.
