Chris Nash - Circus Town

Gallery 3

25 November - 6 December 2026

Opening Night

27 November | 6 - 8 pm

The exhibition closes at 3 pm on the final day.

ARTIST  STATEMENT

Chris Nash’s Circus Town considers the underlying idiosyncratic shapes in everyday objects and ways that objects can be broken down and transformed into a visual language of assemblage. Nash is interested in using assemblage as a method to explore how sculpture can be used to create landscapes through grouping, joining, and organising distinctly different object forms to shape his compositions, a repetitive process of editing and reconfiguring object materials to explore form and space.

This exhibition is a departure from uniformity which Nash has regularly explored in his previous assemblage works, using juxtaposition in Circus Town as a vehicle to express the absurd ways in which our worlds are constructed and value is derived.

Nash’s Circus Town assemblage compositions mirror the way our towns and cities have expanded, with object forms arranged to resemble clusters of skyscrapers and buildings, creating neighbourhoods; a hodge podge of different architectural forms planted without consideration of each other becoming a circus town of sorts. Perspective can be skewed, differences are exaggerated, margins become more distinct.

Nash hopes viewers will share a new appreciation for the ordinary everyday objects in our environment, and consider the absurdity in the constructed worlds we inhabit and how perspective, purpose, and identity can easily become distorted in Circus Town.
