ARTIST  STATEMENT

John’s work explores the quiet beauty of the everyday through oil paintings of landscapes and still life, created from direct observation using the alla prima technique. By completing each painting in a single session, his aim is to preserve the freshness, immediacy, and emotional authenticity of his response to the subject.

John’s landscapes are painted on location, allowing him to respond directly to the changing light, atmosphere, and mood of the environment. Working outdoors encourages a spontaneous and intuitive approach, capturing not only the visual qualities of the scene but also the experience of being present within it.

John’s still life paintings feature familiar objects arranged in simple, carefully considered compositions. Through the interplay of colour, tone, light, and form, these everyday objects are transformed into studies of balance, harmony, and quiet contemplation. The tactile quality of expressive brushstrokes reinforces the immediacy of the painting process, inviting viewers to engage with both the physicality of the paint and the essence of the subject.

Across both landscape and still life, John seeks to celebrate the richness of ordinary experiences through direct observation, expressive mark-making and the enduring qualities of oil paint.
