Artist Statement

Hannah Morgan Savage is a visual artist exploring human relationships to landscape through painting and drawing. She spent her formative years growing up in the city of Kirikiriroa, Aotearoa. Having completed a Geography major at university, Hannah’s practice is informed by learnings in social studies, passion for climate-resilient transformation and experiences of international travel.

Working predominantly with paint and pastel, Hannah’s previous work has explored human relationships with urban and semi-natural environments, using the backdrops of Mauao (NZ) and Brunswick (Au). She investigates public perceptions and access to “eco-conscious” actions, such as council-led food scrap kerbside waste services that divert organic material from landfills. Subject matter has extended across figures in landscapes to still lifes of biodegrading food. Experimentation with hand drawn animation continues to be a creative direction within her practice.

Hannah has showcased work at Brunswick Street Gallery group shows, ‘Feast’ (2022) and ‘Sanctuary’ (2024) and at the Counihan Gallery group show, ‘Future Tense’ (2022). In 2023, she was a finalist in the Waikato Society of Arts Youth Awards.
