Wheel
Through the car window,
I stare—
hermetically sealed within,
watching the world pass
like a cinema screen.
You take me on a journey—
within and without.
You spin.
Where you stop, no one knows.
Where do you take me?
To my nocturnal lover,
or back home?
To the present or the past?
Am I moving forward,
or running away?
Eternity’s metaphor,
you have no beginning,
no end.
Power surges through you—
driving turbines, feeding great machines.
Yet you are stillness too,
potential awaiting release.
In motion, you are action.
You are freedom—
the open road unfolds before us.
Still, I’m trapped in your cycle:
summer, autumn, winter, spring—
then again.
Each revolution, one year older.
My fate chained to your momentum,
bound to your endless turning.
Like Sisyphus, I push you
up the mountain’s peak—
only to watch you roll back
with the night.
A triumph of human hands,
your endless curve
inevitable, eternal—
the engine of change.
The possible and the impossible
both reside in you.
Artist Statement
Wheels hold symbolic power across cultures and eras. They represent destiny, as in the ever-turning Wheel of Fortune; eternity, as in the ouroboros—the snake devouring its own tail; and the steady rhythms of daily life, from the turning of seasons to the revolutions of car wheels carrying us toward (or away from) our destinations.
In this show, I invite you to consider where we're going, what propels us, and what it means to be caught in motion.
