Artist Statement
Last minute changes, unforeseen circumstances and strange weather events. Odd encounters with odd personalities and waiting for a train. Using the upheavals and small moments that change our lives everyday as inspiration, Alexander Rryie's paintings explore characters that are as strange as the times they exist in. Recalling the cartoon imagery of his youth, these slightly deranged and sinister people embrace the absurdity and ambiguity we live everyday.
Artist Bio
Alexander lives and works on Wurundjeri Country. Working across a variety of mediums in an expanded painting field he creates installations using textiles, videos and illustrations. Exploring themes of domesticity and the absurd every day, Alexander creates an ambiguous narrative world. Populated with sinister, oddball characters his expressive figurative paintings are influenced by cartoons, pop culture and folklore.
