Robert Brown’s painting centres on a narrative journalling of direct observations and experiences – moments that have inspired curiosity, wonder and awe. His subjects, including seascape, landscape, still life and portraiture, respond to diverse personal local and further afield experiences. Motivated by the meditative experience painting can engender, his work explores the forces of nature, both subtle and dramatic, which are balanced with the inherent stillness of a particular moment in time. Using veils of tone and colour, applied and removed, his painting searches for transitory qualities of abstract beauty in the visual world conveyed through rhythmic and patterned movement. A career engaged in the nexus between art, teaching and research has led Robert to value the positive ambient and felt experiences painting can engender through the resonances of space, light and colour.
