Not all wonders reveal themselves immediately. Often the wondrous things are wondrous in secret, known only to a select few who themselves are transformed through their role as witness. Other wonders distinguish themselves through their ability to survive, to withstand the myriad of various misfortunes the world has cast in their direction, to just simply remain in the midst of it all. Then there are the wonders that begin in any ordinary fashion, then through time develop and grow into wondrous maturity.
The presence of wonder holds a spiritual significance to Red, who emerged from humble beginnings, has itself weathered the storm of adversity, stayed true to its independence, and continues to grow alongside its creative community.
It seemed then the natural homage to showcase small scale works with the Small Wonders exhibition in 2025. In this showing we opened ourselves to our community, and together we created a celebration of the artistic intimate with over 100 artists gathered in loving embrace.
Like the wonder that grows, Red sought to return to a selection of small wonders in our most recent showing in Gallery 1. And from this fertile ground our artists have sprung forth, presenting works that have grown both in size and conceptual depth.
Isabel Linden has embraced the wonder of joy in her contribution, found in the simple act of sharing a meal. The hidden joy of domesticity is made vibrant in Linden’s colours and only grown more wondrous as her works themselves have expanded. Through picked apart plates and table settings placed in imperfect disarray, Linden’s reverence for the hearth, for familial ritual and connection of the table shines through.
Fiona Tang’s wonder emerges with her mastery of light. With subtle glows and shimmering streams, Tang pays artistic tribute to her observed environment through distinctive tonal play. This careful observer makes painterly work look effortless in her studies.
Frankie demonstrates how wonder is often friends with whimsy. While Pan’s creatures are small in stature, their inherent charm is made large through their maker's sense of play. Delightfully tongue-in-cheek, these sculptures marry form and function and would assuredly enliven any space they occupy.
Zoe Dawes presents wonder in the intimate moments, and immerses the viewer in every detail. Dawes’ hyperrealism transforms the otherwise mundane into beautifully crafted glimpses into her inner world. Zoe expertly intertwines the photographic and the painterly to present an extraordinary command of texture and tone that is entirely unique. From clasped hands to twinkling wine glasses, Dawes determines that the size of the canvas serves no impediment to her ability to draw the viewer into her creations, beckoning us to look closer.
As these wonders grow, so do our artists at Red. In our return to the Small Wonders, we sought to cultivate the work of Linden, Tang, Pan and Dawes as they further hone their creative craft. In return these artists have presented creations that reflect this refinement of practice and technique. We bear witness to the conceptual eye of these creators as they pay thoughtful tribute to our joyous world in all its wondrous forms.
