Sean Claney is a Fitzroy-based contemporary artist whose practice is defined by a refined use of a monochromatic palette, allowing his work to focus on the purity of line, form, and gesture without the distraction of colour. At the heart of his artistic process is automatic drawing, a method rooted in spontaneity and subconscious exploration. By surrendering control to intuition, Sean creates expressive, abstract, and often surreal compositions that act as visual pathways into the hidden landscapes of the mind. His practice emphasises the flow of thought and feeling, where each mark becomes both deliberate and instinctive, charting an inner dialogue between clarity and chaos.
As a self-taught artist, Sean has cultivated a practice that is both deeply personal and outwardly engaged. Influenced by abstract surrealism, Indigenous art, music, and the structural language of architecture, he draws inspiration from the world around him while filtering it through his unique visual vocabulary. Music, in particular, informs the rhythmic flow of his lines, while architecture influences his sense of structure and order within abstraction. The inspiration he takes from Indigenous art reflects an appreciation of storytelling, symbolism, and connection to land—qualities that subtly permeate his work.
