Artist Statement
Sandra Espinoza’s practice involves painting abstracts using oils, as a preferred medium, due to its limitless possibilities for creating textural differences. She appreciates the malleable qualities of oil paint as well as its luminosity.
Within the initial intuitive processes of painting, Sandra will interplay certain limitations, such as tool selection, limited colour palettes and raw application techniques that, as self-imposed restrictions, seem to reflect the constraints and obstacles that can exist within human interactions and the limits to shared understanding.
These paintings were created during two years as an artist resident with the Dunmoochin Foundation. The setting provided lush, bushland surroundings that provided invaluable time to reflect and create. Sandra’s art explores themes related to harmony and conflict. She aims for a balanced resolution within each piece, whilst using colour and form to explore notions of relationship dynamics and communication. Sandra’s paintings seek to balance the desire to connect and meaningfully engage with others within the confines of subjectivity.
These works seek to connect by simplifying symbology, by reducing the noise and by stripping back, at times, to the bare minimum.
As representations of personal experiences through time, this collection aims to connect with the viewer by providing room for reflection amid form and colour. Incidental marks meet with intentional design, providing negative spaces that reveal the initial layers and stages of the creative process and incorporate them into the aesthetic result. Minimal detail allows for subtleties in design to be appreciated as unique expressions, while colour dynamics call for the viewer's attention.
Artist Bio
Espinoza is a Melbourne-based artist, currently in residence within the Dunmoochin Foundation. Her abstract oil paintings have been showcased in numerous local exhibitions, including several group and solo shows between 2023 and 2025. This collection was created during a two-year residency at Dunmoochin, from 2023 to 2025. In June of 2024, Espinoza participated in a one-month artist residency with Can Serrat in Barcelona. Revisiting the works of Picasso and Miro, amongst contemporary works during her stay in Barcelona, reignited her passion for modern and minimalist art. Participation in residency opportunities has been extremely rewarding, productive and pivotal to Espinoza’s future direction as a painter and has confirmed her commitment to an intuitive practice.
