The photography and videography exhibition centers around the theme of "Gazing upon Country" and showcases images captured in Broome and Darwin, coastal towns that evoke a deep sense of connection to the abstract beauty of sand and sea through Indigenous culture. Representing a visual ode to the land and demonstrating the profound respect and connection that Indigenous people have for it, the body of work illustrates how this connection can bring balance and harmony to all of our lives.

Through the exhibition, visitors are encouraged to reflect on the importance of learning from and paying respect to the world's oldest living culture. Each piece aims to evoke an emotion that helps visitors to understand their own relationship with the land, to appreciate the deep connection that Indigenous people have with it, and to preserve it for future generations.

As visitors take a journey through the exhibition, they are invited to feel the sand and sea, to reflect on the relationship between people and the land, and to appreciate the importance of this connection with reverence and respect.

The creators acknowledge the Yawuru people of Broome and the Larrakai people of Darwin, the Traditional Custodians of the land, and pay respects to their Elders, both past and present.

The photographs and video in this exhibit were taken using the latest drone from DJI, the Mavic 3 Pro, and a Nisi ND 1000 filter. This gave the artists access to tripod-like stabilisation, allowing for the use of a 10-stop neutral density filter and shutter speeds from 2 to 8 seconds. The music accompaniment consists of 4 layers of sound created by the artist using Erica Synths, Black System 2, and an Akai MPC Live system.

Artist Bio

Justin Ness, a talented landscape, travel, and international DJ tour photographer hailing from Australia, draws inspiration from his early appreciation of English painters like John Constable and Joseph Turner. Over the past few years, he and his co-creator have explored the breathtaking landscapes of Australia, capturing images of ancient Indigenous art sites, sunrises, sunsets, and outback horizons that leave a lasting impression on the viewer.

Ness's passion for photography goes beyond just capturing beautiful images. He sees it as a means of sharing his personal interpretations of the world with others, constantly striving to push creative boundaries with each new endeavor. His dedication to his craft has earned him numerous accolades and he uses his work to inspire others to explore beyond their own boundaries.

For Justin Ness, photography is more than just a hobby, it's a way of life. His images serve as a reminder that there is always more to be discovered by viewing the world through a different lens, no matter how familiar something may seem.
