ARTIST  STATEMENT

Monica spent her early years on a farm on the northwest coast of Tasmania and, as the daughter of an environmental artist, was inspired to paint at an early age.

Whilst raising a family and building her career as an interior decorator, painting became a way to capture moments and ideas within a busy life.

After three decades as an interior decorator, and with all her children following their chosen paths, Monica commenced painting full time, as a working artist.

More recently, through study with the Conscious Creativity Academy. and under the guidance and mentorship of Christopher Remmers and Devin Eckert, Monica explored her authentic voice as a mystic archetype: deeply introspective and spiritually driven, finding wonder and serenity in lived experience and her surroundings.

Monica's paintings develop from a very introspective place of imagination and develop through deliberate and considered process of play and experimentation, adopting surrealistic and imaginative concepts, where she feels this adds to the emotion, or nostalgia of the story. An example being the merging of the wings of a bird with a face, connecting humanness to a moment of co-existence, or a desire.

Monica combines the technical skills of classical oil painting techniques, relative to portraiture, using indirect painting, layering and glazing techniques to achieve realistic skin tones and three dimensionality to faces, with modern contemporary techniques of deconstructing and dissolving forms in unexpected ways.
