ARTIST  STATEMENT 

Jie Zhou is a Melbourne-based contemporary jewellery maker whose practice explores Incomplete Beauty through women’s lived experiences. Her work focuses on how jewellery can hold personal stories, particularly those connected to the body, beauty, ageing, illness, social pressure, and self-acceptance. Rather than presenting beauty as fixed, perfect, or idealised, Jie is interested in beauty as something shaped by time, pressure, imperfection, and personal transformation.

Each work begins with an interview. Jie listens to women’s stories and translates them into brooches through material, form, texture, and surface. The subject matter of each story determines the materials and forms of the work, allowing each piece to become a response to a specific lived experience. Through this process, jewellery becomes a way to carry stories that are often intimate, emotional, and difficult to express directly.

Working with materials such as silver, copper, pearls and glass, Jie is interested in how material qualities can reflect traces of time, pressure and transformation. Her jewellery is intimate in scale, but carries emotional and narrative weight. Through her practice, she presents contemporary jewellery as a quiet form of communication between story, body, and object.

ARTIST  BIOGRAPHY

Jie Zhou is a Melbourne-based contemporary jewellery maker originally from China. She is currently completing a PhD at RMIT University, School of Art, where her research focuses on contemporary jewellery, women’s body narratives, and the aesthetics of Incomplete Beauty. Working mainly with metal, Jie creates wearable objects that explore the relationship between the body, memory, social pressure, and self-acceptance.
