ARTIST  STATEMENT

Mikaela Kilfoyle’s solo exhibition, It Takes Time, is a hand drawn series of works that explores the subconscious mind and art as an alchemical embodiment of the psyche. Using an intuitive approach to create, pieces are felt before they are seen and undergo an ongoing exploration that reflects back hidden parts of the self. A strong theme of the collection is the journey of self discovery through contemplation using drawing as a modality to express the complexities of the internal dialogue.

Each piece depicts landscapes of Kilfoyle’s interpretation of the “otherside” and energies amidst us that go unseen. This collection of work represents the decade of Mikaela’s 20’s as she navigates finding herself as both an artist and a human. Each piece showcases an aspect of those discoveries through bold symbolism including eyes, staircases, butterflies, wings, doorways, and never ending variations of dots and circles. The choice to keep the pieces to a black, white and greyscale theme are a representation of the intense mental perspectives that were required to facilitate this level of detail. The theme of eyes are a sign of protection, seeing the bigger picture, and tapping into universal love and guidance.

ARTIST  BIOGRAPHY

Mikaela Kilfoyle is a multidisciplinary artist who was born in Melbourne, but raised in California. Having experienced a predisposition to art since she was a child, her teenage years found creativity as a pathway to combat battles with depression. From then the act of creation became intrinsic in finding understanding and purpose in life. Having lived in Melbourne, San Jose, New York, and London her work is inspired by her life experiences including the triumphs and challenges that each human soul faces in their internal world. Using her work as a contemplative space the act of creation becomes a therapeutic pursuit to process the emotional landscape into something tangible to be witnessed. This process facilitates the transmutation of the darker aspects of life into balance with the light to find deeper meaning in collective human experiences.
