Artist Statement
Change Is the Nature of Things is an exploration of how we perceive everyday objects found in our immediate environment and their impermanent nature. Through close-up compositions, reflective surfaces and often abstracted perspectives, the everyday transforms into evocative and playful works that command attention and invites curiosity from the viewer.
Using a medium format camera requires a slow, deliberate process in which Greta Richmond engages fully with the subject- carefully constructing each scene until the moment is ready to be captured, with the final image only revealed after development. This patient, intentional approach mirrors the stillness and care evident in the work itself.
The use of acrylic panels to showcase these works mimic water-like surfaces, giving the images a floating, ethereal presence. The interplay of light, reflection, and distortion reveals forms that are at once familiar and strange, encouraging a reconsideration of how the world around us is perceived.
Artist Biography
Greta Richmond is a Melbourne based photographer working primarily with film photography. A graduate of RMIT University, completing a Bachelor of Photography, she began her career capturing the vibrancy of Melbourne’s nightlife, parties, and fashion scenes.
During the 2020 lockdowns, Richmond embraced introspection and working with everyday objects and materials found close at hand in her home and immediate surroundings, developing into a slower and more considered practice. Working from her home studio with medium format film, she embraces photography as a meditative process-an exploration of stillness, solitude, and the subtle beauty of the everyday. Close-up compositions and curated subject matter foster an intimate dialogue with the viewer, evoking moments of stillness, nostalgia, and quiet reflection.
Her work transforms familiar objects and spaces into abstract studies of form and texture, encouraging viewers to reconsider their sensory connection to the world around them. Richmond continues to expand her practice through experimentation and the creation of new bodies of work that explore the intersection of observation, process, and emotional resonance.
