The Antarctic continent, Ross Sea and neighbouring islands provide perfect locations for the making of images capturing the many and varied artforms of this expansive environment. Icebergs, sea ice, pack ice, towering mountain ranges and the vast ocean and seascapes highlighted the colours, shapes, depth and textures of this amazing wilderness area. Icebergs are sometimes rounded, softer, organic. Others show their stark beauty with sharp angles and beautiful colours. In many instances, the blending of these attributes created what Ross perceived to be mosaic abstracts lending the opportunity for both close-up and wide-angle image-making.

All images in Ross’ exhibition were made on a Nikon z7ii camera with Nikkor 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 S lens. Software packages including Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Topaz and Nik Collection were used to help finesse images.

Images have been printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper; the large prints being printed by Image Science in North Melbourne.

Artist Bio

Ross is always searching for the “perfect” image and loves to explore new and different ways of catching that “moment in time”. Image-making is his attempt to capture and record reality, as he perceives it. He is particularly interested in urban and street photography. Recently though, he has turned his attention to landscape photography. He has enjoyed and been stimulated by photography tours on New Zealand’s South Island. In February 2023 he was fortunate to join other photographers on an expedition to Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands south of New Zealand.

He has embraced digital technologies enthusiastically and revels in the opportunity to capture, process and publish images either in electronic or print formats. The capacity to inject his own interpretation of what he sees and experiences is something he values highly.

Membership of the Diamond Valley Photographic Society has broadened his understanding of photography and photographers. Sharing a passion for image-making with others has stimulated and challenged him to improve. The opportunity to submit images for judging and exhibition provides further incentive for improvement. He has received many awards for images in the past ten years. He has previously exhibited images in the Australian Association of Street Photographers exhibitions held in East Melbourne, the Red Gallery in Fitzroy North and exhibitions held by the Diamond Valley Photographic Society. He has a website (rfkimaging.com) and maintains Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Commissions to provide images for individuals and organisations have proved to be satisfying and rewarding. Working with and alongside people is a privilege.

Ross’ professional life has centred on education. He has been a teacher, curriculum developer and education administrator. Recently he has provided consultancy services to schools, and state, and national education bodies here in Australia. He currently lives in inner city Melbourne with his partner Karen.
