Perfect Imperfection challenges our concept of beauty in the female form whilst exploring relationships and the way we present ourselves to the world.

About the Artist

Originally from Melbourne, Karen has been living on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland since 2004 where her life has been a happy balance between teaching, drawing and sculpting.

A few years ago, Karen became involved with Life Drawing and soon became passionate and obsessed. Karen has always loved to draw and the female form has long been her favourite subject, no matter what shape or size. Believing that often the 'perfect' body is not the most inspiring and not necessarily more beautiful than the woman who is openly comfortable in her own skin, Karen continues to challenge the concept of beauty.

Her work is an exploration into the anatomy of human form and emotion, sometimes part of that form is obscured, deformed or undefined allowing the viewer to explore and interpret meaning in his/her own way. She sees art as a reflection of life, of experiences and relationships, of the conscious and the subconscious, often preferring to leave the faces in her figures as a mystery to reflect the complexities of relationships...of life itself. Karen believes there are faces we show to the world and those we hide.

Her focus of late has been on the beauty of pastel for its malleability and ability to reflect light. She loves the way light and colour both envelop and expose form and finds pastel is the perfect medium, shimmering and reflecting light. Pinks, mauves and blues create the warm fleshy tones of the body. As the colours fade, so does beauty! But while these warm hues touch the light, beauty in all its subtleties lives on. She will never cease to be intrigued.
