At the forefront of the Fitzroy and Melbourne avante-garde scene  since the mid 1970’s, Henry Maas is a well known figure in the Melbourne  art scene. Maas’ approach to his paintings, assemblages and  constructions are an ode to his bohemian attitude, playful character and  deep understanding and exploration of social constraints.

A critical look at men in daily life. Investigating the comings and goings of men and what they do to the world.

Are they right or are they wrong? It is up to us to make a decision.

This is an examination of the role that men have on the structure of life in the world. Henry states that women should take up the challenge and have more power and more say in the way things are done. Certainly there would be less wars, but a lot more fashion. Things are naturally changing no doubt, in the media field, especially at the ABC, and this can only be good. The men in Henry’s paintings project a white middle class conservative view, hopefully this can change and dance around the real issues at hand.

Artist Bio

Henry Francis Maas has been exhibiting his work since 1986 in various galleries around Melbourne. He was the founder of the Busby Berkleys, Black Cat Cafe, Bachelors from Prague, Night Cat, and the Blue Diamond.

He’s been around.

His influence on Melbourne’s artistic scene has been profound.  From opening venues for local bohemians and entertaining people from around the world.  He has been called a national treasure. Henry grew up in his parents Jewish cabaret in St Kilda and has followed in their footsteps, bringing people together  and entertaining the masses. His painting has developed in later life and can be described as artistically naive.
