proposal guidelines 2009 - 2010

red gallery is a large historical warehouse space in the North Fitzroy arts precinct established for the exhibition and sale of contemporary art and design.  We aim to provide a friendly and supportive environment for both new and established artists. red gallery is fully staffed and artists are not required to gallery-sit.

The gallery comprises three spaces which can be utilised separately, or as one total space.  A ceiling height of 3.8m provides ample space for large works.  Each gallery space has good natural light as well as an adjustable low voltage track lighting system.  Gallery one is fitted out with a track hanging system.

Opening hours:

Wednesday to Saturday 11:00am – 5:00 pm

 

Costs:

§          gallery rental        $ 1260 for 3 weeks (includes GST) per gallery space (see floorplan)

§          postage               $ 90 (includes GST)

§          commission         22% (includes GST)

§          bond                    $ 100 (refundable) 

§          design and printing of invitations

 red gallery will:

§          mail out your invitation to red gallery’s mailing list

§          provide a listing in Art Almanac and periodically advertise in art journals

§          prepare a media release

§          supervise the gallery and sale of work

§          organise opening night and provide bar staff

§          provide assistance with preparation of artist/s bio. details

§          provide installation advice

§          provide basic tools and materials to return walls to their original state

§          provide public liability insurance

§          provide access to red gallery’s web site.

 As exhibiting artist, you are responsible for:

§          installing your exhibition

§          dismantling your exhibition

§          printing your invitation cards

§          arrangements and cost of insurance (except public liability insurance)

§          arrangements and cost of transporting your work

§          returning the gallery space to pre-exhibition condition on time.

 Conditions:

§          your invitation must be approved by the gallery prior to printing

§          installation of exhibitions is on Monday

§          dismantling of exhibitions is on Saturday evening 4– 6 pm

§          all work exhibited must have been produced or curated by the exhibiting artist/s

§          red gallery will not accept works that are unfinished or wet

§          the work intended for exhibition should not have been exhibited previously in Melbourne (with the exception of graduate work being exhibited at university graduate exhibitions)

§          You must tell us if you are represented by an agent or gallery

§          red gallery will take all reasonable care but accepts no responsibility for theft of art works or art works damaged by fire, storm, flood or accident.  It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to obtain appropriate insurance cover

§          bookings are only confirmed on receipt of a non-refundable deposit of $200 per gallery space

§          550 invitations are required 4 weeks prior to exhibition

§          the balance of gallery hire is payable 6 weeks prior to exhibition

§          in order to extend audiences, red gallery may schedule functions, launches and seminars outside of exhibition hours.  Such activities would be supervised by gallery staff.

 Exhibition arrangements:

§          exhibitions run for three weeks

§          exhibition openings are from 6-8 pm

§          gallery hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 11am - 5pm

§          exhibitions and openings are supervised by gallery staff.

 Opening night:

red gallery holds a limited liquor license.  Drinks at opening night are available for sale to visitors.

If you would like to exhibit at red gallery:

red gallery welcomes proposals from artists, curators and collectives working in all media,

including painting, installation, textiles, photography, sound, print-making, drawing, video, sculpture and spatial practice.

Proposals can be posted or delivered to the gallery, with accompanying CD of image documentation.

 

Exhibition proposals should include the following:

§          your name, address and contact details

§          preferred gallery space(s) and preferred dates

§          a current CV in word doc format (brief)

§          a statement which outlines the concepts underpinning your work

§          an exhibition plan (how you intend to use the space)

§          any special requirements (plinths, alterations)

§          visual support material in a format best suited to the work (images, audio, documentation)

§          a stamped self addressed envelope for return of support material

§          any other support material you consider relevant (eg press, exhibition catalogues etc)

For group exhibitions, you should also include:

§          one (brief) CV for each group member

§          name, address and phone number of each group member

§          name and phone number of one contact person.
