Happiness Is ... Exuberant and full of life, Christopher Gray's paintings strive to bring opposite states of being into harmony. Happiness Is ... continues on from Gray's large-scale retrospective at Latrobe Regional Art Gallery in 2007, and further develops his famous 'Sqound' (half square, half round) form. As Gray says, 'In this present series, the shaped canvases of the Sqound have now been stretched and pushed to form the grin shape. The grin is the perfect panacea. So I'll paint the grin 'til I drop. I can't imagine any image more powerful or more appropriate in this tough but beautiful world.' Chippo (Christopher) Gray is an established Australian painter who lives and works in regional Victoria. He has been painting and exhibiting for over thirty years, and his works are held in numerous public and private collections throughout Europe and Australia. |

Surface Play
Stripes that project outwards into the
third-dimension, that bend and curve or are tangled or distorted ― these
are the devices used by Susanne Pearce to draw attention to
painting as surface. This new series of acrylics on canvas presents a
contemporary update of modernist abstraction through the re-invention of
optical effects, including the physical manipulation and folding of the
canvas. Marked with conceptual trickery and a gentle humour, Surface
Play is a colourful and
vibrant exhibition that delights in shifting perspectives.
Susanne Pearce is a Melbourne-based visual artist. She completed her MFA at RMIT University in 2008, and was awarded a Siemens-RMIT Fine Art Postgraduate Scholarship the same year. Susanne has participated in many group exhibitions and has held five solo exhibitions in Melbourne including at Trocadero Artspace, The Substation and at RMIT First Site Gallery.

New Landscapes
How have ideas about landscape changed in recent years? And how does the photographic imaginary influence our perceptions of the world around us? This exhibition brings together the work of three young, emerging artists whose works engage with contemporary notions of landscape and its photographic representations. Featuring a diverse range of technical and conceptual approaches ― including traditional documentary formats and new imaging technologies ― New Landscapes questions the place of humans within nature and the effect of expectations upon the experience of place and space. Thomas Breakwell, Nicholas Umek and Andrey Walkling are all currently completing their studies in photography at RMIT. This is their second collaborative exhibition. |
