Anne Hastie

Made in China 2

Anne Hastie’s latest body of works takes inspiration from the rich and vibrant culture of contemporary China. Produced during Hastie’s third artist-in-residency at Beijng's Red Gate Gallery in 2009, these layered compositions were  in part developed as a response to Beijing’s vast, densely-layered urban environments. Elements of colour, atmosphere and environment are  translated into abstract, highly textured works  with extraordinary physical presence.

Made in China 2 also continues Hastie’s exploration of the materiality of paint and the process of painting. Her use of over-painting fractures each image into layers, reflecting the time it takes to create each work. Hastie  employs an innovative technique devised during one of her previous residencies in Beijing; that of manipulating Chinese ink suspended in acrylic varnish to create intricate layers and a physical sensation of depth.

Meet the artist: Anne Hastie will be in the gallery to discuss her works on Saturday 30th May, 2pm & Saturday 6 June, 2pm. All welcome.

Alexia Wheeler

Yesterday and tomorrow

Wheeler’s installation of predominantly works on paper emerges from her experience as a mother with a three-year old child. In exploring the world of personal relations and domestic space, Wheeler draws out the intermingling of speech and thought, sketching out the internal confusion, tiredness, anxiety, lethargy and joy associated with parenthood. Yesterday and Tomorrow forms part of Wheeler’s investigation into memory associations between the artist’s own childhood and the objects and environments that surround her child.

Bevan Shepherd

Recent drawings and etchings

This series of recent drawings and etchings continues Shepherd’s exploration of the physical and psychological impact of human activity upon the contemporary landscape. Shepherd's  images of ecological disruption draw upon lost landscapes, imagined terrains and present-day environments to envision the displacement of wildlife and the effects of environmental manipulation.
