At the pool

Rebecca Jones

Rebecca Jones’ latest exhibition of paintings At the pool bring back memories of long blue summers in the water.

Jones’ work is specifically about summers at Fitzroy Pool, where it’s not just about going swimming, although that is exactly painted from every aspect. A day at Fitzroy Pool is also very much about the pools iconic steps, whether you are sun drenched and lolling upon them or strolling past in full parade. The artist and viewer follow the swimmers from these steps to their first dive, through each stroke and lap, to finally lazily floating beneath the water line.

“My paintings explore the environment around Fitzroy Pool. They concentrate on how people melt, blend, relax, interact and exercise within that space and how their movements collectively become as fluid as the water in the pool.”

Rebecca Jones completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of South Australia. She is represented in collections in South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. This is her second solo exhibition at red gallery, resulting from her City of Yarra artist residency Capturing Life at the Fitzroy Pool.

States

Finn Whitehead

States is a collection of thirty individual woodcut prints created over the duration of 2007. The collection was developed employing the "reduction method", a process used within the practice of relief printing. Reduction method consists of printing multiple layers over each other, with the plate being progressively reworked between each step of the process.

Whitehead has used this process to record the genesis of States as well as the gradual deterioration of the printing plate over time. The negative space steadily encroaches across the surface of the prints, with each printed layer representative of strata that reveals pivotal moments throughout the evolution of the series.

Finn Whitehead holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the Victorian College of the Arts.
