by Christine Martin
The works in Permanence are inspired by people, war and unfamiliar landscapes. Executed in permanent texta, acrylic, nail polish and enamel paint this exhibition revisits Martin’s childhood style of drawing, when the artist would lose herself in patterns and colours and decoration.
“War places people in surreal situations, and parts of wars passed stick in my head like no other history does. By war, I also mean the wars we face inside ourselves. I reveal the beauty of conflict, the beauty you get when you take a good hard look at the dark side.”
This juxtaposition of content and style is perhaps also a comment on the contemporary phenomena of war as entertainment on television, and the heroic stylizing of propaganda images through print and electronic distribution. War in a pop world becomes hyper surreal, and Martin’s hyper colours reflect this.
Martin has a Bachelor of Fine Art and a Diploma of Education from the University of Melbourne and has exhibited in group and solo shows in Melbourne.

by Paula McLoughlin
Paula McLoughlin’s prints explore familiar perspective and topographical views of Melbourne. This series of etchings do not give a true description of an actual location, more they offer an abstracted glance of a place in passing.
“I have used my view of the city and the suburbs of the west and inner Melbourne as a springboard to the creation of a series of work depicting slices of an urban landscape that have an architectural and structural look.”
The artist focuses on corners and alleyways, hedgerows and fences, aerial views and abstruse angles of the city to provide a sliver of recognition, a sense of “I’m sure I know this place,” while parring out the details to emphasise structure and silhouette.
McLoughlin holds a Masters in Print from Sydney College of the Arts. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and her work is held in Australian and international collections. |

an exhibition of prints
by Libby Letcher
Letcher’s prints reveal both her interest in chaos theory and her study of human nature, “With my back ground in nursing and counselling I am curious about what drives us. What are the ingredients and mechanisms in the cocktails that churn out the substance of our lives?”
For Letcher the processes of print making are instrumental to both her finished work and her own thought processes. “I find that mark making is a way of thinking. Feelings, ideas and thoughts are explored through the physical act of art making.”
The resultant works have an inherent elegance and contained rhythmical motion; their formal qualities and subject matter equally balanced and interrelated.
Letcher has exhibited
in solo shows in Melbourne and placed as a finalist in the Blake Prize.
