Jarrad Stevenson
RED ALL OVER is an exploration of the European relationship with the natural environment. Stevenson draws his inspiration from Australian history, particularly that which relates to the geography and rural culture of his birthplace in the New England highlands.
Through the lost wax casting process Stevenson has captured the tumultuous energy of a Victorian bush fire. Twisted and stormed forms intimately collapse against each other from the energy of a fire front. A rusted and scorched earth lies flat beneath, dry and unyielding to the flayed organic forms above.
For all its energy RED ALL OVER is a quiet exhibition of perceptive works. Stevenson has immaculately edited the work, casting aside all excess information and leaving the viewer with a series of fundamental forms. The result is a subtle reminder of the roots of white Australia. The work reveals the catastrophic effect when inhabitants disrespect the land.
Jarrad Stevenson graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2001. He currently works at the Bill Perrin Foundry. This is his second solo exhibition at red gallery.

Out of Mind, Into Place
Deane Sobey
Out of Mind, Into Place is an eclectic collection of ambiguous narratives. Through the unconventional use of painting and drawing Deane Sobey amalgamates the styles of Japanese manga, surrealist automatic writing and grafitti into his medium scale images.
The paintings make use of high key colour palettes including lurid pinks, fluorescent blues and iridescent yellows. The palette is concurrently kitsch, unnatural, acidic and yet harmonious, evoking the idea of an artificial space. The hierarchy and focal point of the work shifts constantly and organically in an unexpected way, adding to the multifaceted complex reading.
By layering the narratives within an image Sobey investigates the balance between the rational and irrational, the logical and illogical, the tangible and intangible.
Deane Sobey has recently completed an MFA from RMIT. This is his fifth solo exhibition in Melbourne.

Violeta Capovska
Lustre is a physically soft and ghostly encounter. Inspired by a desire to reconnect with the lost tradition of craft making among the women in her family, Violeta Capovska has embarked on an historical voyage with a needle and thread.
Capovska’s meditative image making process is reflected in the thousands of hand sewn beads linking and embellishing relationships between female members of her family. Through silk dress cut outs Capovska has made a large number of gowns that earily hang through the space.
The gown appears in all shapes and sizes, suggesting different metaphors. The gown is seen as a symbol for Mother, the mother who nurtures, the mother who gives life and also who takes away. Smaller works are inscribed with hand printed Cyrillic script, nursing pads are embroidered and beaded to resemble traditional Macedonian aesthetics.
Violeta Capovska completed her MA at RMIT in 1995. Since then she has exhibited extensively through eastern europe. She has recently returned to Melbourne to continue her arts practice.
