Liesl Pfeffer
Unravelling explores the spaces and intersections between three different artistic media. Liesl Pfeffer’s large scale photographic prints have the edges of an etching, the expression of painting and the gloss of photography. Pfeffer has abandoned the traditional notion of photography and developed a body of photographs without a camera or negative. Each image is made by enlarging small squares of polaroid film that have been fastidiously etched into with a scalpel. The result is an emotive, gestural and expressive body of work. Through this cutting and developing process Pfeffer has created her own visual language where the works are rich, visually dense and saturated with colour. Liesl Pfeffer recently graduated from the Queensland College of the Arts. This is her first solo exhibition in Melbourne

Curio
Inger Morrissey
The 17th century practice of collecting was fueled by our fascination for the different, the unknown and the curious. This fascination for ‘the odd’ formed the foundation of museum tradition – the collection of unusual objects. Curio delves into the world of the antediluvian collector.
The medium scale works are painted and etched with bitumen on board. The result is a sepia syrup surface that self luminates in its inherent gloss.
Curious forms pass through the image. Contour lines mark mathematical forms next to alien organic structures. The surface of the work appears antiquated, these odd forms may have been sealed in bitumen for aeons.
By employing Surrealist techniques, Inger Morrissey’s work fuses a connection between the practices of 17th century museum collection and the modern knowledge of scientific structures.
Morrissey graduated from RMIT in 2004. This is her fifth solo exhibition in Melbourne

Betra Fraval
Intersection embraces the wall and explodes the frame, leading the viewer into a line of possibilities. Fraval pieces together fragments of a world, plotting lines through life, seeking reference points and locating the self within a surrounding space. In the gallery hangs a wall-size, multi-paneled drawing on paper that spreads off the page and on to the wall. Fraval’s installation is made up of various elements; drawing, three-dimensional objects, cut paper and wall painting. Drawings of symbols, intersecting lines, cartography and visual fragments map out an open-ended journey. The work becomes a reflection of the complex nature of identity in a global culture. The artist draws on a personal language of multiple ‘homelands’ (Brittany, London, Las Vegas, South Africa, India and Melbourne) and constant relocations. These ruptures and disconnections inform and continue to influence her work. Betra Fraval completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2005, and was awarded the Maude Glover Fleay Award and the Tolarno Hotel Annual Art Award at the VCA Graduate Exhibition. Intersection is her first solo show.
