Alizon Gray
Untitled
Untitled is a flirtation with abstract expressionism. Alizon Gray’s large scale paintings are a celebration of colour. The repetitive layering of enamel paint builds to a rich and lustrous surface. The result is an unfathomable depth and palpable silence. Minimal mark makings on the surface ornament the canvas. Bold reds and wafts of green streak and scratch at the surface.
Gray’s visually seductive paintings are not a quest for representational truth but are rather a collection of ideas in constant flux. They are an abstraction of beauty with a Japanese aesthetic concern. The viewer is left looking into, through and beyond the canvas into an imagined scape.
Alizon Gray has just completed an Honours degree in painting from the Victorian College of the Arts. This is her first solo exhibition.

Georgia Metaxas
No Limits - A Daily Ritual with Helen Sullivan
9.30am Mon - Sun, 2005
No Limits is collection of 7 life size photographs of Helen Sullivan. Georgia Metaxas documented the appearance of Helen Sullivan for one week. The result is an honest exploration of the human condition. Metaxas examines the question of visual representation as it relates to personal identity. Metaxas’ work tests the boundaries and purpose of the documentary concept.
Metaxas met Helen Sullivan during the ‘No Limits’ program at St. Mary’s House of Welcome in Fitzroy. Helen is a writer, and experiences mental health issues on a day to day basis. The essence of Helen is captured in her garden oasis. She asked to be photographed at 9.30am, the series began on a Monday and continued, at the same time, every day for a week.
At first glance the images appear similar to each other. However on closer inspection the complexity of Helen’s nature and the poignancy of the series becomes apparent.
Georgia Metaxas is a Melbourne based freelance social documentary photographer. No Limits is the first series in her ambitious long term project highlighting the human condition.

Jane Gollan
Jane Gollan has glimpsed the everyday object and shifted it seamlessly onto the surface of the canvas. The result is a quiet collection of paintings, unobtrusive, yet grand in scale.
The smooth and layered application of oil paint allows the work to mimic her initial scan of the source material. Gollan extracts the essence of an object, its patterns, reflections and depth. The resulting image seem to ‘appear’ without obvious reference to mark making. Untitled moodily shifts with shadow and form, alluding to a cinematic sense of movement and change.
The large scale works encourage a personal response from the viewer. The silent depths of the illusionary surface echo light and subtle movement. No questions are left unanswered, Untitled is a complete experience.
Jane Gollan is a Melbourne based artist. She graduated from RMIT in 2000 and has exhibited in Victoria and Queensland.
