cate maddy

Cate Maddy’s work is an investigation into the idea of domination and submission in relation to gender issues, referencing fairy-tale like imagery as a metaphor for the human struggle to find harmony within relationships, and the environment.

In fairy-tales the roles of good and evil, male and female, are clearly defined.  Often animals are seen as equal to men, sometimes taking on human characteristics and emotions.

The narratives which emerge from the paintings are ambiguous with a menacing undercurrent, initially disguised by the naive painterly figuration and the heightened use of colour.   Mixed media and stitching further emphasize gender stereotypes, and the gestural marks and flaws speak of emotion and what it is to be human.

Cate Maddy is a recent graduate from RMIT, and winner of the 2004 Siemens RMIT Fine Art Travel Scholarship.

concrete

Concrete”: Embodied in matter, having objective reality, existing in a particular reality, not abstract, denoting a thing and not a quality, state, or action.

The idea for this series emerged from the artist’s observation of barricades, concrete structures and roadwork during his daily commute.  During this time Tremlett developed a particular interest in “no go areas” with their bright markings and sense of safety and exclusion.   The symbolic significance of enclosure was a point of interest and exploration.

This series sees a return to painting for the artist, having developed an interest in stencil art which relies on defined imagery and spray enamel as its method and medium.

Capturing the essence of the fleeting moment......a glance from the window of a moving car, Tremlett contrasts the sensation and slickness of transport (symbolized by the car duco appearance of layered enamel) with the stagnancy of peeling paint surfaces symbolic of evolution and decay.

Clayton Tremlett is a Melbourne based artist.

monica hatcher

domestic

Monica Hatcher’s exhibition, still, has been a photographic search for order, calmness, simplicity and the mundane.  Hatcher’s investigations into the domestic realm have taken her into the homes of friends and strangers.   Comparing preconceived notions of domestic life with the eventual reality, hatcher looks for indicators within the minute details of the domestic environment.

The exhibition consists of C-type photographs varying in three sizes.  The placement of the images within the gallery is an important aspect of still…focussing on the images and how they work as a cohesive series as well as the space they occupy.

Monica Hatcher is currently completing a Masters Degree at the Victorian College of the Arts.
