plastic photo show

presented by Obscurity Pictures

A photographic exhibition devoted to works created with plastic cameras and other low-tech photographic techniques.

The simple-to-use cameras such as the Holga, Diana or cameras from the Lomo family often provide a welcome change from professional equipment or from the "rules" of photography taught to beginners. Many plastic cameras (called so because they are made out of plastic -including the lens!) are often uniquely deficient in quality construction resulting in light leaks, warped or blurry images and little or no shutter speed or aperture settings. Such simplicity enables the photographers to concentrate on the images rather than the camera or to simply "point and shoot". The resulting images are often a delightful surprise with many of the image "faults" combining to create effective and truly artful images.

Presented by Obscurity Pictures, and hosted by red gallery. This is the third year of the Plastic Photo Show.

 Fiona Halse

Fiona Halse takes Klee’s line for a walk. She displays the versatility and expressiveness of line through her of small oval paintings and  mixed media works on paper.

Several of the oval paintings were selected for the annual Mary Place Gallery Exhibition in 2004 of six young artists (Sydney). There is also an array of recent drawings and mixed media works which display a break in style from the small contained oval format to a calligraphic open compositions in the recent works on paper.

The exhibition has a golden hue. The ovals have a Early Renaissance Icon feel and the long drawings have a similar suspension in form  as Japanese Screens.  Both often have an ochre mid tone.

The work is found and discovered in a direct manner, the process of drawing is important in these works.  The oval paintings are reworked in  the fast drying acrylic and the drawings have a sense of re-assessment , collage, re-cut and redrawn aspect to them. All works search for harmony and rhythm in form and colour.  Line traces that search.

Every line says “ Here I am!” each holds its own, reveals its own eloquent features and whispers “Listen to my secret!” (Kandinsky)

Fiona Halse, born in 1974 and graduated from Monash University 1996. She has received The Ella Donald Scholarship and Ian Potter Grant. She was selected for the MPRG National Works on Paper and Sotheby’s Taste in Art Auction. More recently she was selected from artists in  Australia and New Zealand to be in the annual Mary Place Gallery Young Artists Exhibition 2004 and she was selected for the Prometheus Art Award 2005. She has also been awarded a support stipend residency at Can Serrat International Art Centre, Spain 2006.

organon

Installation artists Baker, Clugston and Schweitzer respond to the environment of Gallery 3 at red.  It is a site-specific transformation of the space where organic forms replicate and grow.  These ethereal forms consume the gallery, suggesting other possibilities that a space could be.   The use of old and abandoned materials within the installation invites the notion of rebirth and regeneration.  It’s old versus new where the old recreates a new space.

The three artists utilise a variety of discarded and waste materials.  The process of material manipulation is highly evident in their work.  Synthetic materials create an elaborate hoax, masquerading as natural forms, mimicking natural growths.  Organon is the fine art of deception, emphasising a discourse between the real and the artificial.

Baker, Clugston and Schweitzer are recent graduates from the Victorian College of the Arts.  They have found strength in their collaborative practise.  Together they have extended and grown their work beyond an individuals limitations.
